PVB Nanocomposites as Energy Directors in Ultrasonic Welding of Epoxy Composites

نویسندگان

چکیده

Ultrasonic welding (UW) is a well-established technique for joining thermoplastic composites and has recently been utilized in the aerospace automotive industries. In case of thermoset (TSCs), polymer-based material placed at interface called an energy director (ED) required. The choice coupling layer linked to several requirements, such as processing temperature, high adhesion (TSCs) adherend mechanical strength resulting welded joints. this work, authors investigated possibility using Poly-vinyl-butyral (PVB) reinforced with graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) UW TSC adherents. effect GNPs aspect ratio content on weldability carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) investigated. PVB/GNPs nanocomposites different filler contents (from 0.5 wt% 2 wt%) ratios (100 2100) have fabricated. influence viscoelastic properties flat EDs assessed. Finally, improvement lap shear (LSS) 80% was found high-aspect-ratio respect neat PVB. use damping materials TSCs paves way new generation UW.

On the effect of flat energy directors thickness on heat generation during ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites

This paper presents a detailed experimental assessment of the effect of the thickness of flat energy directors (ED) on heat generation at the interface during ultrasonic welding. Power and displacement data showed clear differences caused by the change of thickness, related to heat concentration at the weld line during the process. The extent of the heat-affected zone was assessed by welding sp...

Ultrasonic welding of CF/PPS composites with integrated triangular energy directors: melting, flow and weld strength development

This paper presents a fully experimental study on melting, flow and weld strength development during ultrasonic welding of CF/PPS composites with integrated triangular energy directors. The main goal of this research was assessing whether the heating time to achieve maximum weld strength could be significantly reduced as compared to ultrasonic welding with flat energy directors. The main conclu...

Fatigue and ultrasonic testing of epoxy-glass composites

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to find relationship between the degree of strength degradation caused by fatigue and the changes of ultrasonic wave characteristics such as wave velocity and damping coefficient. Design/methodology/approach: Epoxy-glass composites were subjected to oscillatory bending loadings with constant deflection. During fatigue procedure the force needed to achieve ...

Ultrasonic welding of thermoset matrix composites reinforced with glass fibers using a co-cured retaining layer

In this paper, ultrasonic welding of glass fiber reinforced thermoses, co-cured whit a thermoplastic has been studied. Co-curing process forms a connection between the thermoset and the thermoplastic while curing the composite. Considering that the calculated stress should not be related to the dimensions of the sample, a horn with a tip dimension smaller than the standard overlap was used. The...
